Ashek
This is Tim
Rayborn's second release, Ashek.
Tim Rayborn is Solace's
first signed artist. From the bio on Solace's site: Though
raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Tim Rayborn lived for
nearly seven years in England, where he completed a Ph.D. at the
University of Leeds, and worked in the fields of early and world
music. He founded and directed Ensemble Florata, whose
recordings for ASV/Gaudeamus received international critical
acclaim. In addition, he worked with the noted British medieval
ensemble Tintagel, and performed with them on BBC broadcasts,
Belgian live radio, in Majorca, as well as a tour of the Pacific
Northwest in the U.S. Tim has toured the UK and continental
Europe extensively, and worked with traditional musicians in
Marrakech and Istanbul. He plays nearly 40 musical instruments
from Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
Tim is
currently an instrumentalist with Ya Elah (a women's Jewish
vocal group), directs his own medieval music ensemble, Caladrius,
and is the musical director of Shuvani, a music and dance group
tracing the Roma ("gypsy") trail from Rajasthan to Spain. He
recently released two new solo recordings: Chordae - medieval
harp music, and Ashek - Balkan, Middle Eastern, and Indian
music. He is also working on several new CDs this year,
including an album of Shuvani's music, and a recording of
Balkan, medieval, and Scandinavian music.
This CD features

East and Central Asia.

The following is taken directly from Solace's
website:
Ashek features vocal and instrumental music spanning several
centuries and thousands of miles, united by a common theme: that
of the longing for true love, whether physical or spiritual. The
songs can be caressing like a feather in a gentle breeze,
longing for a souls beloved, or rhythmic and complex like a
dancing butterfly on the heels of a strong wind. One can see a
group of traveling bards as Tim shows his passion and knowledge
of melodies and rhythms from the Middle East, the Balkans, and
Central Asia. Caravan with the wandering musicians of centuries
past as Tim guides you on a journey of love, belief and
tradition.
